JEWISH Heritage TOUR

This tour is recommended for those who have a full day available in the city of Istanbul.

Check out the day plan with important visits to places where there are Jewish memories in Istanbul.

Meet at the hotel with the local guide at 9:00 am

We will visit Galata, a Jewish quarter. Visit the Galata Tower, built by the Genoese in 1303. Afterwards, visit the Ashkenazi Synagogue. Located near the Galata Tower, the building’s facade is especially imposing, with three eastern arches and octagonal rosette windows.

Inside, the floors are marble, the high dome is painted with stars, and the ornately crafted chest of dark wood blends Eastern European and arabesque styles. It is the only active Ashkenazi synagogue open to visitors and prayers.

Founded by Ashkenazim of Austrian origin in 1900, it is the last remaining synagogue among a total of three built by Ashkenazim.

Then we visit the Neve Shalom Synagogue which is the central and largest Sephardic synagogue in Istanbul. It is open for service especially on the High Holidays of Shabbat, for Bar Mitzvah, funerals and weddings.

We visited the Jewish Museum. You will see the Ottoman and Turkish influence on the Jewish community in Turkey and it is the only museum of its kind in Turkey.

If there are no events scheduled for the day, you will have the opportunity to see the interior of the synagogue.

(Remember that your passport and reservation are required to enter synagogue visits)

Let’s take a walk through the streets of Balat to get to know this neighborhood where there is the first synagogue in the city. Balat was one of the most important Jewish settlements in Byzantine and Ottoman times, located along the upper reaches of the Golden Horn.
